“We have complete plans for the Admin District from before the pugs took over,” Foley said.

He held up a data transfer unit next to Kenji’s ear and transmitted a map to the implant. Then he repeated the procedure with Hannah.

“As you can see,” Foley activated his personal holo, which floated now in front of his face in view of the other two, “the old location for the main AI core was in a sub-basement directly underneath the Administration Building. This is old school architecture, which makes sense. Euripides is one of the first planets colonized and that’s the way they did it back then. The core was close to the center of power.”

Kenji nodded. Hanna’s face remained neutral. At some point, Foley realized, she or Kenji had found some kind of health nanobots and injected her with them. All signs of bruising on her face from where he had hit her earlier had disappeared. Now she just looked sullen, or carried no expression at all.

He liked the new Hannah. She stayed quiet.

“At the start of the war, agents working for Petra Roe attacked the AI on the pirate planet Lute. Now Lute, as you know, is a cattle gap planet out in the middle of nowhere. Petra Roe is the closest civilized settlement to it, and that’s not saying much.”

“How do you know Lute is so rustic?” Kenji asked.

Foley gave him a sharp look. The question was asked in an innocent tone, though.

“I was stationed on Petra Roe. That place was a backwater and Lute is worse.”

“So, you visited it?”

“No, I never went to the pirate planet, okay? Are you happy? I know about it by reputation because it was right next door.”

“I see. Please continue with your story.”

Foley stared at Kenji for a moment through squinting eyes. Hannah’s stock suddenly rose substantially. If he had to spend weeks aboard some old rusty system hopper, she would be a much more compatible companion to bring along than Kenji.

He already had been thinking up ways to eliminate Kenji after this job was done, or at least figure out a way to leave him behind. Now the former option began percolating in his mind.

He set those thoughts aside for now.

“So, as I was saying, the Lutians only had one real core up and going for the whole planet, and that was in the basement of their Admin Building, just like here. A couple of operatives from Petra Roe were able to infiltrate the basement and toss an egg grenade in the server room, and the pirates were left without their full AI for months.”

“Obviously that will not work here. The Republicans have cores across the planet, especially now that the fleet is here to help supply them.”

“I’m aware of that, Kenji. But here’s where it gets interesting. I’m going to bet that they are still in the process of installing the new cores and don’t have everything in place. I’m also going to bet that destroying the core under the Administration Building is going to cause PLAIR and her Republican stooges a whole lot of trouble.
